Grant programme
A core component of the Hessische Kulturstiftung’s work is the grant programme initiated in 1992. Every two years, we award travel and residency grants with durations of up to 12 months to visual artists of all ages who were born, currently live, or have studied in Hesse.
Currently closed for grant applications
The grant award process for the years 2027/2028 has been completed. Applications for the Hessische Kulturstiftung 2029/2030 travel and residency grants will be accepted starting in the late summer of 2028.
Our grant programme: Facts and figures
„ Our grant programme provides impulses, promotes careers, and facilitates international exchange. It is a long-term investment in contemporary art in Hesse.“
The goal and purpose of the grant programme
The Hessische Kulturstiftung travel and residency grants offer visual artists the opportunity to devote themselves entirely to their artistic and research projects in a new environment. Immersion in various artistic traditions and contemporary currents enables artists to expand their artistic abilities and perspectives. The intercultural experience not only contributes to their personal and professional development and the transfer of ideas, perspectives, and conceptions, but also enlivens cultural exchange and the international interconnection of the art world.
The grant programme is designed as structural support that provides scope for experimental and long-term development of artistic work independently of short-term market dynamics, in particular against the background of what are often precarious working conditions. To date, the Hessische Kulturstiftung has supported more than 240 artists with altogether over 7.5 million euros in grant funds. This support represents a foundation for high-quality art that can hold its own in an international context.
