Funding for acquisitions
One unique feature of the Hessische Kulturstiftung compared to other public funding agencies in Hesse is its support of non-profit art and cultural institutions through the acquisition of especially valuable cultural artifacts and art objects as well as outstanding collections. Acquisitions of this kind serve to create value as well as new research, presentation, and education possibilities of lasting benefit to the public.
The foundation awards funding solely on a pro-rata basis, usually in the form of one third of the project’s overall cost or the amount necessary to cover a funding shortfall.

Application guidelines
- All funding applications must be submitted to the Board of Directors of the Hessische Kulturstiftung.
- Applications must be submitted in writing.
- Funding requests must be submitted well in advance of the project’s implementation; retroactive funding is not possible.
Please send us a detailed description of the project, illustration and documentation material, and a detailed and binding cost and financing plan. A template for a cost and financing plan is available for downloading further down on this page.
- Applications for partial funding of an acquisition should convey why the desired purchase is sensible in light of the collection concept.
- The institution submitting the application confirms that the ownership circumstances and provenance of the object or collection in question have been clarified.
In this context, please note the provisions of the Kulturgutschutzgesetz (Cultural Property Protection Act). - The applicant must submit two expert opinions by recognized specialists regarding the special significance of the object or collection. These specialists must be independent and should, if possible, be currently active in their profession.
- The Hessische Kulturstiftung reserves the right to obtain its own expert opinions; this applies in particular to assessing whether the proposed acquisition is worthy of the price asked.
- Auction acquisitions: In the case of purchase in an auction, the limit must be adhered to. If the limit is exceeded, the institution submitting the application bears the additional costs; the amount provided by the Kulturstiftung does not change. If the acquisition costs less than the approved limit, the applicant institution must refund the unspent amount to the foundation.
For applications from institutions in the Rhine-Main area:
Please note that projects can be co-financed by either the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain or the Hessische Kulturstiftung; financing by both institutions is not possible. The Hessische Kulturstiftung generally contributes funding in the amount of up to one third of the project’s overall cost.
For applications from institutions in the region:
The foundation can grant up to 50% of the overall cost of projects carried out in the region. Other conditions vary, depending on the individual case, and are sent to the applicant along with the funding approval.
