Living and working studio
The guest apartments at the Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa are located on the first floor of the villa; they are fully furnished apartments and studios in one.
Artists living at Villa Kamogawa also have access to a communal area featuring a lounge, a fully equipped kitchen, and a large terrace. An additional studio space near the villa’s Japanese garden is also available for use.
Artists with preschool-aged children can move into one of the two family-friendly apartments.
Information for artists with disabilities
The Hessische Kulturstiftung expressly invites artists with disabilities to apply for a grant and strives to provide the most precise possible information about the spatial circumstances in the studios. We are very happy to answer any questions you may have about accessibility and barriers and to discuss how we can accommodate your needs. Please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Location and local offerings
The Goethe-Institut’s Villa Kamogawa is located in the Yoshida district (Sakyō-ku), in the immediate vicinity of the Imperial Palace and the Okazaki cultural district. This district is one of Japan’s most important museum and art hubs and is home to two key institutions in the Japanese art scene: the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art and the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto (MoMAK). Unlike Tokyo, which is more market-oriented, Kyoto remains characterized to this day by the close connection between contemporary art, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. Particularly in the fields of ceramics, textiles, paper, wood, and lacquer art, established structures exist that provide artists with direct insights into traditional production and working processes. Villa Kamogawa thus offers a working environment that combines institutional ties and international networking with direct access to one of Japan’s most significant art and craft traditions.
